Do You Have to Share Your Family Photos Online? (A Photographer’s Honest Take)
Your Photos Don’t Belong to the Internet
It might be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t think your family photos were ever meant for the internet.
Somewhere along the way, it became the norm.
You book a family photo session, receive your gallery… and then you share it. Post it. Announce it.
But more and more, I’m noticing a shift—especially with the families I photograph here in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
They still want the photos.
They still value the memories.
They just don’t want them online.
And honestly? I get it.
Quiet moments turning into precious memories, to keep for always.
Why Some Families Are Choosing Not to Share Photos Online
There’s a quiet kind of freedom in stepping back from social media.
No pressure to post.
No worrying about who’s seeing your children.
No feeling like your life has to be visible to be meaningful.
Some families are choosing not to put their kids on the internet at all.
Others have simply stopped sharing as much—and realised they don’t miss it.
It’s not about hiding.
It’s about protecting what feels personal.
Moments of in jokes, connection building for you to keep close
Are Family Photos Still Worth It If You Don’t Share Them?
Absolutely.
Choosing not to share your photos doesn’t make them any less valuable.
If anything, it makes them more personal.
Because now they’re not for everyone.
They’re not for an audience.
They’re for you.
For your living room wall.
For your phone.
For the folder you open on the hard days.
That’s where their value lives.
You Don’t Owe Anyone Access to Your Family
There can be this quiet pressure after a session—that you should share your photos.
To show people.
To justify the investment.
But you don’t owe anyone access to your family’s memories.
Not your followers.
Not your extended circle.
Your photos are yours.
Always.
Stolen moments with your children never mind their age, are always worth keeping.
What This Means for Your Photo Session
When there’s no expectation to share, something shifts.
Sessions feel more relaxed.
More present.
Less performative.
You’re not thinking about how it will look online.
You’re just in it—with your people.
That’s where the real moments happen.
